Verifying WhatsApp without using your own number
WhatsApp has no username. The phone number is the account, which makes the choice of number more consequential than on almost any other platform.
How the verification goes
You enter a number, WhatsApp sends a six-digit code by SMS, and entering it creates the account. If the SMS is slow, WhatsApp offers a voice call instead — so the number needs to be able to take a call as well, not only a message.
Why the number choice matters more here
Re-installing, switching phone, or being logged out all trigger re-verification against the same number. If you no longer control it, the account is unrecoverable — there is no email fallback to rescue it.
For anything you intend to keep, that argues strongly for a rental number you retain rather than a single activation.
Practical notes
Wait out the full SMS timer before requesting the voice call, and keep the code page open — the code expires quickly, and requesting a new one restarts the wait.
